How we built Meddle: our innovation journey
Project co-funded by the Emilia-Romagna Region and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (PR-FESR 2021-2027)
The story of Meddle is one of tangible innovation, born from the need to make Industrial IoT accessible to small and medium-sized manufacturers. Thanks to the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region and the European Union through the PR-FESR 2021-2027 program, we were able to accelerate our platform’s development, turning an ambitious idea into a mature, validated, market-ready product.
This project marked a turning point for Meddle: it allowed us to invest in infrastructure, develop advanced features, test the platform in real industrial environments, and showcase it to qualified audiences at major industry trade fairs. Here’s how it happened.
The foundations: building the right infrastructure
Every great product starts with solid foundations. Our first step was setting up the technological infrastructure we needed: workstations for our technical team, specialized software licenses for cybersecurity and code versioning, and hardware dedicated to prototyping.
We purchased PLCs, sensors, and gateways to create a local testing environment, replicating the conditions our customers face every day in their factories. This allowed us to develop and validate platform integrations quickly and in a controlled setting, laying the groundwork for everything that followed.
We also adopted professional tools for code versioning and CI/CD, ensuring that every line of code was tracked, tested, and released according to high quality and security standards.
The heart of the project: advanced feature development
Software development was the technological core of the entire project. We focused on two key modules: “Visualization and Analytics” and “AI for Industrial Machines”, designed to transform raw machine data into actionable operational insights.
On the infrastructure side, adopting Terraform marked a crucial shift toward an Infrastructure as Code approach. This enabled us to fully automate cloud resource provisioning, improving security, scalability, and multi-tenant environment management — a fundamental requirement for a SaaS platform.
On the commercial front, we integrated Stripe payments and a direct purchase flow from our landing page, making it possible for any company to subscribe to Meddle independently, without intermediaries. This transformed Meddle from a product requiring assisted sales into a self-service solution, significantly elevating the product’s maturity and scalability.
Protecting innovation
Alongside development, we initiated the process of protecting our intellectual property. Patent writing was funded through the 3i voucher obtained by Meddle, while ISO certification was planned as a subsequent step in our growth journey.
These choices reflect our pragmatic approach: invest first where the impact is immediate, without losing sight of long-term goals for robustness and reliability.
From theory to practice: testing in real industrial environments
Developing a platform is only half the work. The other half is proving it actually works under real factory conditions. That’s why we dedicated a significant phase of the project to testing and validation in pilot environments.
We verified system reliability, data acquisition and processing accuracy, AI module performance, and overall platform stability under operational load. The tests concluded successfully, documenting concrete results and certifying Meddle’s suitability for use in real industrial contexts.
These tests weren’t just a formality: they provided invaluable feedback that guided the final optimizations before launch.
Bringing Meddle to the world: trade fairs and networking
Building a great product isn’t enough if no one knows about it. Thanks to this project, we participated in Italy’s most important industry trade fairs: MECSPE, SMAU, and SPS Italia.
These events allowed us to present Meddle to a qualified audience of manufacturing companies, system integrators, and service providers. We generated commercial contacts, initiated strategic partnerships, and most importantly, collected direct feedback from industrial stakeholders — invaluable insights that helped refine both our product and our go-to-market strategy.
Strategic vision and project management
Behind every technical achievement was structured management and a clear strategic vision. Operational coordination, resource monitoring, and consulting support kept the project on track and on schedule.
Strategic consulting activities played a key role: they helped us consolidate our business plan, strengthen our business model, and align technological choices with the company’s growth strategy. The result is a Meddle that’s stronger, more autonomous, and more ready to compete in the market.
